Rangers is the name of the lo-fi tape collage project performed by Joe Knight. Now based in San Francisco, Knight was raised in North Dallas, gaining a love of music from an early age starting with classical guitar studies. Knight began experimenting with home recording in 2005, mixing heavily processed live recordings of instruments, sampled snippets, muffled vocals, and found sounds into spacy, flowing soundscapes. Rangers made its recorded debut in 2009 with cassette releases for As Above So Below and Not Not Fun, followed a year later by Bored Fortress, a split EP with Matthew Mondanile’s like-minded Real Estate solo side project Ducktails. Full-length debut Suburban Tours also arrived in 2010, condensing Knight’s sonic explorations into shorter bursts. For follow-up album Pan Am Stories the next year, Knight took the opposite approach, this time offering a double LP that made room for the songs to sprawl where they may.
